APC Society

The APC society is a non-profit organisation with the aim to improve the treatment and care of men with advanced prostate cancer. The APC Society organises the Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference (APCCC). The APC Society is the legal representative of APCCC in Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Silke Gillessen

President

Professor Silke Gillessen is a Medical Oncologist at Kantonsspital St. Gallen in Switzerland with focus on genitourinary cancer and also leads the clinical trials unit for oncology and hematology there. Prof. Gillessen performed her specialist training in Medical Oncology at the University Hospital of Basel and the Cantonal Hospital St.Gallen in Switzerland. From 1997 – 2000 she was a clinical research fellow at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. After her return to Switzerland, Prof. Gillessen build up the unit for genitourinary cancer in St. Gallen, was the president of the SAKK GU group for two terms and currently is the chair of the EORTC genitourinary cancer group. She has together with Dr. Omlin initiated the Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference, which was first held in March 2015 and then again in 2017.

 


Prof. em. Dr. med. Thomas Cerny

Thomas Cerny, born 1952,  Prof. med. for Medical Oncology of the University of Bern, Switzerland and Chief of the Department of Oncology-Hematology at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen 1998-2017 has received his medical formation in Switzerland (Inselspital, University Hospital of Bern) and UK (Christie Hospital and Patterson Institute, Manchester). His main research activities are in clinical pharma-oncology mainly in  developing and exploring new drugs and improving therapies for patients with rare cancers such as sarcomas. He has conducted and participated over decades in many national and international clinical studies i.e. for patients with lung cancer, for patients with malignant lymphoma and many more. He has >250 peer reviewed publications.

Furthermore he is a national leader in political aspects for improving patients care, quality of life and equal access to diagnostic and therapeutic progress. He is a former president of Oncosuisse, where the federal National Strategy against Cancer  (NSK) is located and the Swiss Cancer League (KLS) which is leading the project. He is acting president of the best known foundation in Cancer Research in Switzerland (KFS) and Board member of the Human Medicine Expert Committee (HMEC) of Swissmedic. 

 


PD Dr. Aurelius Omlin

Dr Aurelius Omlin is Medical Oncologist at Kantonsspital St. Gallen in Switzerland with focus on genitourinary cancer and early phase clinical trials. Dr Omlin performed his specialist training in Medical Oncology at the University Hospital of Berne, the regional hospital in Thun and the Cantonal Hospital St.Gallen in Switzerland. From 2010 – 2013 he was a clinical research fellow at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London under Prof Johann de Bono focusing on early clinical trials especially for men with advanced prostate cancer. After his return to Switzerland, Dr Omlin together with Prof Silke Gillessen initiated the Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference, which was first held in March 2015 and then again in 2017.

 


Dr. Ruth Lyner

Advisory Member

Ruth Lyner is a lawyer by training. Since 25 years she is working as a designer and distributor for sports fashion. She founded her company together with her husband who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In APC she is representing the patients and their relatives.

 


Claude Thomann

Claude Thomann is a founder and senior partner of one of Switzerland’s largest law firms. He has been the legal advisor of the Swiss Cancer League and other associations and foundations with similar objectives since 1980.
